Xian, Xinghai (冼星海)

Xinghai Xian(1905-1945), Chinese composer, studied at the Lingnan University, National Music Institute of Peking University, and Shanghai National Music Conservatory. In 1929 he went to Paris and studied at the Paris Conservatory with Vincent D'Indy and Paul Dukas. In 1938 he became dean of the Music Department at Lu Xun Institute of Arts in Yun'an. His best known work is "Yellow River Cantata" upon which the Yellow River Piano Concerto is based. He composed 2 symphonies, a violin concerto and choral works.

Xiao, Youmei(蕭友梅)

Youmei Xiao(1884-1940), Chinese music educator and composer, he studied in Japan, studying pedagogy, piano, and voice. Then he continued to study at Leipzig University. Returning to China, in 1927 he founded the National College for Music in Shanghai(in 1949 it was renamed the Shanghai Conservatory). He served as the president of the institute until his death in 1940.

Yaremchuk, Nazariy

Nazariy Yaremchuk(1951-1995), Ukrainian engineer and singer. In 1963 he began to sing in Smerichka along with singer Sofia Rotaru. He was working as the head engineer at the chair of economical geography of the Chernivtsi University. However love of music seemed stronger than all, he moved to a philharmonic group, in which he worked till the end of his life.

Young, Selwyn Walford

Selwyn Walford Young(1898-1977), Belizean musician and composer, he composed the national anthem of Belize "Land of the Free" accompanying lyrics written by Samuel Haynes.

Youskevitch, Igor

Igor Youskevitch(1912-1994), Russian-Ukrainian ballet dancer and choreographer, educated in engineering at Belgrade, but studied ballet in Paris and Belgrade. Later rapidly he became one of the greatest ballet male dancers of the 20th century, as a master of classic style and as a dance partner of Alicia Alonso, a famed Cuban ballerina.

Ysaye, Eugene

Eugene Ysaye(1858-1931), Belgian violinist and composer, began his violin lesson from his father, then with Wieniawski and Vieuxtemps, taught at the Brussels Conservatory, toured Europe, Russia and US as a violin virtuoso. In 1886 he established the Ysaye Quartet. In 1951 an International Violin Competition in Brussels was created for his memory, this became the violin section of the Queen Elizabeth Music Competition which takes place once every 4 years. He composed violin concertos and violin solo pieces.

Yupanqui, Atahualpa

Atahualpa Yupanqui(1908-1992), Argentine singer, songwriter, guitarist and writer, he is considered the most important Argentine folk musician of the 20th century.
